NYXX

Original Music

Drum and Bass

NYXX is a classic but very hard 2D bullet hell shoot 'em up.
The music for the game is quite drum 'n' bass inspired. With nasty synthesizer melodies, rushing jungle drums and some clichés here and there, such as the obligatory orchestra hits.
On the one hand, the game is very tough, so I wanted to convey this feeling with all the "evil" harmonies and synthesizer solos. On the other hand, it has this retro look that awakened some joking sides in me, like including the oldschool orchestra hits and even a drum 'n' didgeridoo solo for the end boss.

Evil but also funny

Most of the synthesizer sounds (basses, plucks, melodies) came from my analogue Roland SE-02 and it was very exciting to compose with its limitations while getting inspiration through those, at the same time.
I was also quite free in my work and had lots of fun exploring this kind of music for the game. The result can be seen as a soundtrack on the one hand, but also as an electronic music album on the other.

I’ve made a whole video series about my composing progress:
