Wildfrost
Sound Design & FMOD Implementation
Recordings
Wildfrost is a tactical roguelike deckbuilder game.
To achieve, that the card playing part of the game felt really organic, I looked for the best-sounding cards at home and "performed" and recorded all the card movements in front of a good microphone. So everything like shuffling, drawing, stacking, letting cards fall on top of each other, and so on. This resulted in a very long recording session, from which I was taking snippets over and over again to design certain sounds for Wildfrost.
I also used my own voice here and there and all sorts of foley objects in my studio, like bells and old toys, to give the sounds their own character.
The Ice Setting & Abilities
The ice theme has been a great inspiration for me. Not only for the snowstorm animations that are being used for transitions between screens. I also used icy and sparkly “glitter” sounds on top of rewarding sounds, like opening a chest or smashing ice blocks to free companions and also for some of the ability sounds.
One thing that most people probably don't notice, but which is extremely important, is that the sounds should all match the key of the soundtrack. For example, a swipe sound or 'shhhiiiing' shouldn't be a semitone lower than the music playing in the background.
